Central Bank of Oman (CBO) Annual CEO meeting 2014 – BAsel lll

Muscat: Hamood bin Sangour Al-Zadjali, the Executive President of the Central Bank of Oman (CBO), presided yesterday at CBO Head Office over the annual meeting of CEOs and officials from local banks.

In the inaugural speech, he stated that this forum has acquired a lot of significance as it provides an opportunity to senior bankers and policy makers to come together to engage in a constructive dialogue on the major issues affecting the banking industry. He also affirmed that CBO accords highest importance to the deliberations in this forum as it helps it in fine-tuning its policies for the Oman’s economy in general and the banking industry in particular.

He also affirmed that the year 2013 was yet another successful year for our banking sector with positive growth in deposits, advances and profits, pointing out that banks at the end of 2013 remained well-capitalised and were able to adhere to Basel-III capital adequacy norms, which were issued by the CBO in November 2013.

Basel-III guidelines
I congratulate the banking sector for their sincere efforts in meeting the enhanced and stringent Basel-III capital guidelines. Basel-III is not simply about asking banks to hold more capital. It is an opportunity for banks to improve the quality, consistency and transparency of their capital, which will help them to absorb cyclical shocks and losses,” .

In addition, the Central Bank of Oman chief spoke about the lessons learnt from global financial crisis, calling upon banks to focus their regulatory/ supervisory attention in accordance with the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) guidelines on the subject, and to take care to ensure that Oman’s banks remain competitive vis-à-vis the banks of other countries.

Basel lll – Bahrain consultation papers – closing date in May 2014

As with the rest of the GCC region, banks in Bahrain will be moving ahead with the Basel III accord, hence more stringent regulations will shortly.come into play.

A number of current consultation papers are out from the central bank in relation to capital adequacy standards as well as a number of pending updates to CBB Rulebook are pending approval. These will close 15 May 2014.

These changes are expected to shortly be reflected in the CBB supervisory and prudential templates.

Dynamics Ax and Lasernet-Output management

Group companies, have a multitude of external forms to send to trading partners, banks, authorities etc.

These forms are often bundled e.g. Packing slip and invoice go together and are distributed through a number of media including print, e-mail and EDI. .

Gardner defines output management as: “middleware that drives the output process and supports the automated creation and delivery of business process and ad hoc documents.”

Output management generates a data stream from a source system, then formats the data based on business logic, and renders the data in a predefined output format and transports this rendered output to the chosen destination.

So in simple words you can capture the print output form your erp system and format it better outside of the system e.g in Word, and then distribute it with more options e.g fax, email, xml, to archive etc.

This greatly simplifies maintenance. It greatly reduces consulting time for report formats especially when you want to change these wholesale
Its easy to update e.g. a tel number via a template word document across multiple commercial documents.
When you upgrade the report formats don’t need to change the final document just the data mapping.
Its much easier to have different versions e.g a sales order with item bar codes for on client, with item pictures another and plain for another, or to do things like add a page total or a different sort order.

Why Use 3rd Party Output Management?

Clearly, if you are a small business with limited needs for formatting you external print, you’ll probably be better off using what is already provided by your ERP or CRM system, but if you are a larger enterprise with multiple brands across multiple geographies with a large portfolio of documents, then output management is worthwhile.

If you have ever tried to design and build an invoice layout in Dynamics AX (or any other ERP system for that matter) that supports the needs of multiple subsidiaries with multiple brands in many countries, then you know what I mean. It is time-consuming, and needs testing and fine tuning and often leaves everyone slightly disappointed with the results.

Output management has a number of advantages:
◾External forms look far more professional.
◾It avoids modifying reports or precision forms in Dynamics AX.
◾It has significantly more intuitive form layout capabilities.
◾It is specifically designed for the job.
◾Less expensive in the long run.
◾Provides efficient and flexible distribution of documents to multiple destinations.
And perhaps for customers the most important feature is that they can make changes in most cases immediately without need for consultant expertise.

The most important advantage of output management is the ability to give the business what it needs, when it needs it. External forms are “the public face of the business”, and their branding in a market or region. It should not be held up by long-winded change control governance processes and spend control procedures and extended development and testing . By using output management with multiple overlays, you achieve this agility without taking significant risks.

If you have multiple systems in your solution landscape, output management can help harmonise the way forms look form those different sources and how they are produced and distributed across the business. This is often an advantage when some documents derive from the CRM system, others from ERP or Pyrollssytems and yet more from the eCommerce solution.

Is AX Up for the Job?

Microsoft made a significant improvement by introducing Print Management. With Print Management we were able to set up multiple destinations for each document type. Since then, not much has happened, actually. It would be great, if we were able to write conditional scripts, so we could base the print destination on a number of conditions e.g. Brand, Product, Customer Group etc. also, it would be ideal, if it was possible to “bundle” documents. This way you could for instance automatically print labels with the packing slip.

As with most erp systems scripting and conditional formatting in SSRS is not so easy for precision forms with lots of lines and columns.

What Solution ?
Well some good ones don’t come with a connector for Ax

We offer Lasernet from FormPipe which is very common in Scandinavia from where Ax of course originates. So they have a long history together. The solution is closely integrated with Dynamics AX i.e.its embedded within and provides Print preview capabilities. Lasernet also offers some input management capabilities, so if you are after an easy-to-implement solution without too much complexity this solution is a good bet.

Unifying the data in SQL Server Parallel Data Warehouse with data in Hadoop is PolyBase, a ground breaking query technology developed by Dr. David DeWitt and his team in Microsoft’s Grey Systems Labs.

Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012R3 for Retail includes a Call Center for as a new type of retail channel
• In a call center, workers take customer orders over the phone and create sales orders. Call centers can be added to organization hierarchies, and can be managed together with online stores and retail stores.
• Create catalogs for call centers, and use new catalog features.
• Associate details with sales items. Use this feature toview additional information about the selected line in the sales order form: images, purchase order information, delivery dates, and other relevant text.
• Create scripts that appear in the Sales order form at the time of order entry e.g. to guide the sales process or for up sell and cross sell .
• Manage continuity programs, in which customers receive regular product shipments on a predefined schedule.
• Create orders from a saved list of products that customers frequently order together.
• Track the status of a direct delivery purchase order via the associated sales order.

Dynamics AX 2012 R3 launched

Microsoft officially launched Dynamics AX 2012 R3 this week via a virtual event hosted by AX General Manager Christian Pedersen.

Dynamics AX which adds significant new capabilities and sets the stage for a major architecture and interface update with the next major release.

Microsoft showed R3′s mobility capabilities, which gives developers a platform for building out more apps.

Hal Howard, corporate vice president, Microsoft Dynamics ERP Resource and Development, talked about tools such as Power View and Power BI as well as out-of-the-box reports and KPIs for businesses in a variety of industries.

“We have also delivered a number of amazing new experiences along with R3, including the device experience and we continue to update to update those new experiences for new BI apps with Business Analyzer, new work that that we’ve done around timesheets and expense, and approvals and the new warehouse apps,” Howard said. Part of Microsoft’s strategy is to deliver rapid business intelligence (BI) and reporting value to customers. To that end, Business Analyzer, a touch enabled, tablet-friendly, report viewing tool …allows customers to connect to and report on ERP data so you can easily consume it, said Errol Schoenfish, director product management at Microsoft, in a recent webcast

Business Analyzer is available on Windows 8 and 8.1 tablet or PC and on Windows 8 phone for Dynamics GP, AX and SL. It will be available for iOS devices with the R7 release in the July time frame and further down the line on Android devices.

Currently Excel content is not available for Dynamics AX. From the AX perspective we have SQL Analysis Services Cubes, financial cubes for the CFO role, project cube for the practice manager role and Management Reporter content for financial reporter.

Business Analyzer is one of a growing list of mobile apps the Dynamics ERP product teams have taken on. On the AX side there are new mobile apps for expenses, time entry, and approvals.

Other new functionality in Dynamics AX 2012 R3 also includes a “beautiful, new, modern point-of-sale experience” for the retail industry and warehouse and transportation management functionality that ensures customers can be more efficient, delivering the right product at the right time to their customers. This is developed in html 5 which gives a peek into what to expect from the UI in Ax 2014.

Customers that are already using the Dynamics AX 2012 R3 solution include: Lotus F1 Team, Delta Airlines, outdoor clothing retailer Kathmandu, US craft brewery New Belgium Brewing and furniture manufacturer Ashley Furniture.

WPS deadline for KSA

Companies with at least 1,000 workers are allowed four more months to implement the wage protection system introduced by the Labor Ministry last year.

The ministry’s decision to postpone the implementation of the fourth phase of the protection bill for companies with more than 500 workers, originally scheduled for July 1, to Nov. 1 was taken after the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency ( SAMA ) demanded that pressure be eased on the Kingdom’s banks, which are tasked with salary payment administration under the new system.

The implementation of the fourth phase, will coincide with the payment of Hafiz unemployment benefits to jobless youth, which also has to be accommodated by the banks.

Companies employing 500 workers on average far outnumber establishments .

The wage protection system involves the creation of a database containing updates on wage payment in the private sector. Information includes the amount and date the salary was paid. The new system also stipulates that salary payment should be made solely through banks.

Private companies in the Kingdom were categorized according to the number of workers they employ.

The first phase involved companies with more than 3,000 workers. A total of 119 companies fulfilled conditions out of 184 companies in that category, while 48 companies pledged to submit their updated data soon after the deadline and 17 had services halted by the ministry for failure to comply with the new system.

The second phase, which was implemented on companies with more than 2,000 workers, saw 81 companies fulfill the ministry’s demands and 13 penalized for failure to comply, while 17 companies had services resumed after complying past the deadline.

Only 445 private schools out of a total of 1,183 schools fulfilled the criteria and services to 713 have been suspended, while 25 schools had services resumed after updating their information.

Companies that fail to comply with the regulations within two months of the deadline have their services suspended. Renewal of work permits, however, is not affected by these suspensions.

Employees working with companies that fail to comply three months past the deadline can transfer to other companies without the permission of their sponsors.

Windows Server 2012 R2 Update and SQL

If you are or will be running SQL Server 2012 or SQL Server 2014 in the near future, then you should be running Windows Server 2012 R2 as your operating system.

If you are already running Windows Server 2012 R2, then make plans to install the latest update as soon as possible. According to Microsoft, “Future updates as of the patch Tuesday in May, including security fixes, will be based on Windows Server 2012 R2 Update as the baseline.”
