Gartner – ERP Magic Quadrant 2011

January 13th, 2011

Every year Gartner publishes the magic quadrant of ERP players for the mid sector ie 100-1000 users. The Magic Quadrant segments players into four quadrants

  • - Leaders: The players considered the best with both the vision and ability to execute. Typically these players have newer technology, the vision to invest in the product and take it in the right direction as well as the full breadth of features required.
  • - Challengers: ERP Software vendors that often compete and have the ability to execute but not the vision. These players typically have older technologies and lack a unified vision but have a complete set of features as they have been in that market for some time.
  • - Visionaries: Players that do not have the feature capability today but are investing in the product and have the vision to take it in the right direction.
  • - Niche Players: Point solutions that may work for some segments but generally have very little investment behind them and also do not have a rich set of features.

Microsoft Dynamics AX is  in the leader quadrant for the second year in a row due to heavy investments by Microsoft into the product as well as newer technology that makes it more agile and flexible to adapt to a business. Gartner sees this (ERP) market as undergoing a major modernization, via established systems with deep functionality on older technology being  displaced by modern agile systems. Microsoft Dynamics AX definitely leverages thew hole Microsft technology stack to offer a scaleable system with deep and broad functionality, ease of use and ease of customisation. role centres and dashboaards, BI, Sharepoint Integration, Unified messaging, Workflow , integration with Project Server, Outlook, Excel, Word, specialized industry solutions – its a compelling offering.

Gartner Magic Quadrant for ERP for Mid-Market companies with annual revenues between $50 million to $1 billion

Gartner Magic Quadrant for ERP for Mid-Market companies with annual revenues between $50 million to $1 billion

According to Gartner, “Microsoft Dynamics AX is specifically targeted at midmarket organizations. It offers broad and robust functionality, and delivers low TCO through integration with other Microsoft products and technologies. Microsoft’s industry strategy for AX results in strong functionality, which is built by Microsoft’s internal resources or acquired from proven partners.” Gartner points to interesting key trends in this study.

Service-oriented architecture (SOA) and BPM prove their value in packaged applications for the midmarket: A combination of SOAs and BPM concepts allow for an unprecedented level of flexibility and adaptability.

  • New user interfaces make ERP adoption and collaboration easier: Ease of use and rich user interfaces help users to find their way through the functionally comprehensive ERP packages. Built-in search capabilities help users to identify and locate the business objects that need their attention, and the role-based concept of roles helps them to select the appropriate action to take. Personalization lets users define the way that objects are presented and can be acted upon, and saves them from having to go through complicated screen sequences to complete a required business activity. This is especially important for users that only occasionally have to access an ERP solution. Built-in collaboration features help these users to easily get in touch with contacts inside or outside their own enterprises, which is extremely useful in midmarket companies that rely more heavily on the flexible, ad hoc cooperation of their workforce in areas with less well-defined business processes.
  • The most commonly used technology for extracting and analyzing data in midmarket companies is Microsoft Excel:

The following  criteria were used by Gartner to select qualifying software vendors. An ERP suite must fulfill all of these criteria to be included

  • Geography: The vendor must serve at least two of the following three global regions (North America; Europe, the Middle East and Africa [EMEA]; and Asia/Pacific). The product must have a minimum of 20% of new customer entities in at least two of these three geographies.
  • Installed base: The vendor must have at least 1,000 customers in a product’s installed base to qualify, and the installed base distribution must be at least 20% in two of the three geographies.
  • New license sales: Of quarterly license revenue per product submitted, 10% must come from net-new customers. Also, two of the three geographies must contribute at least 20% of new license sales each.
  • Viability: The offering must be a viable and supported offering at the time of publication of the Magic Quadrant.
  • Application functionality: The functionality provided by the vendor in the application must contain the systems of records for G/L and product master, plus at least four of the following systems of record: order data, customer master, employee master, vendor and supplier master, purchasing, contracts, assets, pricing, cost, quality and planning.
  • Architecture: The majority of an application must be in one architecture and data model (application platform), or the vendor must have a credible vision for accomplishing this.

Benefits of BIM strategy with Vico Soft

January 4th, 2011

Do you have what it takes to make BIM a strategic initiative in your firm? Are you ready to start winning new business with BIM, performing effectively and profitably, and offering the Owner a better experience? Vico can help.

During the last five years, Vico’s customers proved for themselves the benefits of BIM. Innovation  drove new project wins, customers exploited 3D modeling, clash detection, model-based coordination, rigorous content planning, multi-model management, change management, and model-derived block drawings.

Some went further into 5D with model-derived quantity takeoff, cost estimating, and location-based scheduling.

It is no exaggeration to say that the Vico customers who “went the deepest” are the same companies who reaped the most benefit from the technology.  They literally picked the jobs they wanted to win, developed the best plans, recruited the best teams, executed more effectively in the field, and delivered a new and exciting owner experience.

So how do you get started?

Contractors from all over the world turn to Vico for advice about getting started with 5D BIM. Our specailist  cosnultants at Synergy Software Systems jhav eworked in the ocnstrucitonindustry and know what GCs need to successfully implement BIM within their organizations.

Stephen Strickland, one of Vico Software’s  onsite project managers, recently offered his recommendations for contractors who are considering the impact of BIM. Stephen began his career in law, but got the construction bug watching buildings go up in Detroit. He quickly became involved with BIM while working for a large General Contractor where he served as a project BIM manager and helped outline new implementation processes.

1.Listen to Coach Wooden:
Legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden always told his players “failing to prepare is preparing to fail” – I think contractors should always keep this phrase in mind when making decisions about BIM. When you combine the rampant inefficiency that has plagued the construction industry with the advent of modern technology, the shift toward BIM as the hub of project information is not a matter of IF, but rather a matter of when and how. If you have not already started building an infrastructure to develop the knowledge, skills, and workflows required for BIM implementation, then you are preparing to fail.

 2. Every Project is an Opportunity:
No excuse! Utilize BIM in some way on every project you perform. Pick one BIM use and apply it on a single floor or area of a building, to gain practical knowledge and experience that will benefit your company in the long run. While each individual pilot implementation may only seem like a small step, the accumulated value of the knowledge and experience gained from such exercises will be exponential when applied across your entire organization.

 3. Involve Everyone:
The phrase “lonely BIM” was coined to describe parties utilizing BIM in isolation on a project. Avoid thiswhen you  implement BIM within your own company. The development of an effective BIM strategy requires personnel from all parts of your organization to contribute the information and feedback necessary to shape the integration of BIM into standard workflows. At a minimum, at least one person from each operational unit should participate in some manner to guide your BIM strategy – don’t just leave it all to “the BIM guy.”

   4. Master Your Information:
If you want to fully leverage the power of BIM, you must develop an organized and systematic approach to classify building elements and data. While BIM provides the platform to efficiently integrate and analyze huge amounts of project information, the output will only be useful when the proper relationships are established between data and objects within the model. Investing  time and resourcesto thoroughly understand and organize all the data your company utilizes throughout the project lifecycle will enable you to map this data to objects and unlock the full capabilities of BIM.

  5. BIM is Not a Volunteer Activity:
For BIM initiatives beyond the project level, the prevailing mindset is to leave it up to “internal champions” to take up BIM as a personal cause and lead the charge for awareness and change within the organization. While such people are essential to the success of BIM, even the most passionate individuals cannot succeed unless they are provided with dedicated time within work hours. BIM is far too important to be developed only by volunteers in their spare time – if you want to make BIM a priority, find the right people within your company and find a way to incorporate BIM into their weekly job responsibilities.

U.A.E. – 60 year old workers can now extend to 65

January 1st, 2011

A spart of its recently announced wider Labour reforms, UAE has raised its retirement age  from 60 to 65, giving expatriates leave to work for a further five years, a Ministry of Labour official said on Thursday.

So  expats can now secure work visas up to the age of 65. The Ministry will start accepting requests from January 1 to issue the over-60 permits and the smae fees are expected to permits for workers over 60 as to those under 60.

For many areas, where skills are in short supply, this will be one of the Labour Law changes to be welcomed by both employers and workers. It is perhaps the most sensible as 1 in 5 workers are specaalted as  likely to live to 100+. If skills are in short supply, then hanging onto the experienced ones a litle longer makes sense.

And of course that has nothing to do with my own visa renewal this year!
